The Bespoke Process

Step 1: The Initial Consult

To begin the process we’ll sit down with you and discuss what you’d like from your new look. Weather in person or by video chat, we’ll discuss any needs, aesthetic or functional, that you require, weather you’re looking to commission an item from one of our collections, or to have us design something completely new. We’ll make selections of fabric, either from our stock, or we’ll source something to your needs through our network of mills and vintage fabric dealers. During this time we will also discuss timeline, if there is a specific date you would need your garment completed.

We’ll take detailed measurements and often have you try on a relevant fit garments to simulate cut, style and drape. In that fit garment we’ll take a few photos for further reference, completing the initial fit process.

With all of that complete, we will submit to you a completed sketch of your new look for your approval, and will begin hand-drafting your pattern, hand-cutting each piece and hand-sewing your garments in preparation for your next fitting.

Step 2: Second Fitting

Depending on timeline or fit needs, we may proceed directly into cutting your commission in it’s final material, but often, we conduct this fitting in a muslin garment.

Muslin is a simple, typically undyed, cotton cloth, used often to prototype new garments to avoid wasting less replaceable materials (our muslin is reused and recycled to reduce waste). With the muslin garment we can explore more detail fit and design needs, and explore any larger questions before proceeding to the final material.

In about 60% of our commissions, the initial measurements are enough for us to begin with the final material. We will cut your garments and prepare it for fitting with hand stitching, allowing us to easily deconstruct it again to continue sewing, or (if timeline is a concern) sew your final garment to roughly 75% completion. This will allow us to still make most large interventions to adjust fit and prepare for final construction and detailing.

Step 3: Final Fittings

Your commission may take 2-3 fittings to complete, with a few weeks spacing out between fittings. If this whole process is being done remotely, that may take some extra time to account for mailing the garments between us. Once we get to our final fittings we will have a chance to discuss any final detailings such as buttons, or stitching, to make your garments truly personal.

Subsequent fittings, following the first main fitting will typically be to make minor changes such as shortening a sleeve, or widening a waist. It is here that we take in to account any final considerations before your garment is yours to take home.
